Benton Park West tiny house project

The Benton Park West Tiny House Project will be an environmentally regenerative and one-of-a-kind project. This house will be built on a vacant lot purchased through the St. Louis City Land Revitalization Authority (LRA). This livable home will use energy saving building concepts such as radiant heating, solar power collection, rainwater collection, and passive heating and cooling concepts. The building itself, inspired by the work of Bob Cassilly, will be created from mostly reclaimed materials. The style will be a unique expression that keeps the historic status of the neighborhood in mind.

Artists in the St. Louis area will be invited to contribute to the project, including the development of a vibrant permaculture garden. Besides creating a beautiful home, the Benton Park West Tiny House aims to challenge the idea of what constitutes usable building materials, and workshops will be held to discuss the benefits of using reclaimed or “imperfect” materials to create art and build viable structures. The country as a whole is facing a housing crisis. This project will create replicable, low-cost designs that can be implemented elsewhere in the St. Louis community. By empowering the community to rethink the resources they have, beautiful creations can be made from our abundance.

Benton Park West Tiny House is led by Dwayne Tiggs. For more than 20 years, Tiggs has been working in the St. Louis community as a skilled craftsman and woodworker. He earned his Master’s Degree in Architecture from the University of Memphis and has designed and built custom pieces for private use and in businesses throughout the St. Louis region.
